What You Should Know About Gun Cleaning

Virtually anyone can learn to fire a weapon even if it is not quite as easy as it looks on television. The one thing that many people have a problem with however is gun cleaning. Gun cleaning is extremely important, especially if you want your weapon to continue firing for a long time. There are many people out there; however, who do not understand precisely what gun cleaning involves, and these are the people who end up with some serious firearm related issues. You do not want to be one of these people! On that note, it's no surprise that every military requires their personnel to keep a gun cleaning kit stowed away in the butt of their rifle.

There are many people who tend to use a cleaning rod to push a cloth through the bore of the rifle, and they do not bother to clean the cloth after each pass. This not only contributes to the problem, but it can also be harmful to the weapon. Remember that the best thing you can do is use a surfaced steel or brass cleaning rod. There are aluminum rods out there, but you should know that they are not only soft, but they can also attract dirt specks. If you do lose an aluminum rod, make sure you clean it every single time you pass through the bore of the rifle.

Never use too much oil - oil tends to attract dirt and dust! If you can see the oil, you used too much oil. If you feel that you have made this error, it would be a good idea to store your gun upside-down to allow the oil to drain out the way it came in. The last thing we will cover is strip-cleaning your rifle. This is a very important aspect of gun cleaning, and every 1000 rounds you will need to make sure you completely disassemble your rifle and clean the individual parts.

If you are unsure as to how this procedure is completed it would be best to refer to your manual. Another thing to note is that you need to ensure you do not lose ANY parts. If you lose any parts, even a small spring, your rifle will fail to fire, and you may be amazed to find out just how much a small spring can cost.

When in doubt, take your rifle to a gunsmith. Yes it will cost you a bit of money, but if you really think about it you would probably much rather have that expense on your hands than the expense of replacing the individual parts or even worse, replacing the entire rifle. As you can see, there is much more to owning a gun than simply firing it.

These are a few things that you will need to keep in mind when you are out at the range or even in the field during hunting season. Get a feel for your rifle and know when it needs upkeep. Do this, and you should be quite pleased with the results you achieve.
